Our Workshops

  • Kōkōwai

Kōkōwai is a half-day workshop centered around pūrākau and the creation of kōkōwai. As you make art works with kōkōwai, you will explore the foundations of Te Ao Māori and our inherent connection to te taiao (the environment).

  • Kākano

Kākano is a three-day workshop that safely guides year 10 students through our local histories and empowers students to be active change-makers in our communities. Using art and indigenous pedagogies, students will express their emotions and vision for our future.

  • Kahikatea

Kahikatea is a one-year professional development programme. Kahikatea is designed for educators to engage in the foundations of Te Ao Māori, our local histories and deepen their own identity. Educators will experience creative pedagogies and be enabled with the tools to enrich their own teaching practice.

Kōkōwai

me aro ki te hā o hineahuone

Kōkōwai (red ochre) is at the core of our very being. It signals a sacred genealogy that connects us to the earth and to each other.

Our half-day kōkōwai workshop is an introduction to Te Ao Māori through the creation and use of kōkōwai. We begin the workshop by lighting an ahi (fire) where we share pūrākau (oral histories) and reflect on our inherent connection to the environment.

Kōkōwai is suitable for tamariki, educators, community groups, corporates, creatives and anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Te Ao Māori or kōkōwai.

Kākano

he kākano ahau, i ruia mai i rangiātea

Our tamariki are seeds of greatness. Our aim is to water these seeds with knowledge and aroha so they may grow and flourish in this world.

Kākano is a three-day workshop designed to safely guide year 10 students through our local histories and empower them to be active change-makers in our community. Kākano utilises three predominant art forms for students to navigate their local history and express their vision for the future. All artworks created during the workshop are then exhibited to share their learnings and aspirations with whanau, friends, and the community.

Kākano encourages students to have empathy and compassion for themselves and their peers as we engage in a lifelong journey of learning.

Kahikatea

As educators, we hope to be like the Kahikatea — to stand tall and unified in our journey of cultural enrichment so we can provide safe and empowering learning environments for our tamariki.

Kahikatea is designed for educators to engage in the foundations of Te Ao Māori, our local histories and deepen their own sense of identity. Kahikatea provides educators with creative tools to navigate the complexities of our history and enrich their own teaching practices.

Kahikatea is a one-year programme divided into four half-day workshops (two days in total). Through Kahikatea, educators will gain firsthand experience with creative learning tools to inform their own teaching practice.
